Would you like to venture into your own Mercedes Vito campervan conversion? Find out what you need to bear in mind in our practical tips:

How can you convert the Mercedes Vito into a campervan?

There are various ways to convert the Vito into a camper van. Typical conversion measures include the installation of seating and sleeping accommodation, kitchen units, storage space, insulation, electrics and water installations.

Sleeping

To equip a Vito with comfortable sleeping accommodation, you can use a folding or pull-out bed system. Alternatively, a fixed bed can also be installed in the rear of the Vito. Very important for a comfortable sleeping environment: darken the windows and doors.

Cooking

If you want to equip your Mercedes Vito with a kitchen, you can either use a mobile camping kitchen with gas stove or hotplate or install a fixed kitchen unit with hob, sink and storage space.

Tip: If you are looking for a particularly practical van / outdoor kitchen, then take a look at the BOXIO-Wash and the new mobile premium gas stove BOXIO Cook. This combination is a real insider tip for all outdoor enthusiasts, because the system does not require any electricity or water connection, so you can use it anywhere and take it with you.

Create storage space

Custom-made cupboards and shelves on the walls or modular storage systems such as stackable boxes are ideal for creating storage space in the Vito. You can also use the space under the bed for Euroboxes. Hanging nets or bags offer additional storage space.

Tip: Always work with a Eurobox system. This also allows you to easily determine the height of the bed frame.

Insulation

Special foam sheets or insulating foils are suitable for insulating your Mercedes Vito. Insulating the van may not be as much fun, but good insulation ensures a pleasant interior climate, regardless of the outside temperature.

Installing electrics and water

To install the power and water supply in your Vito camper van conversion, there are a few steps to follow: You can install a separate battery system for the electrics, which is charged via solar cells, for example. This then supplies elements such as lighting, sockets or even a 12-volt cool box. For the water supply, it is best to install a water tank that is connected to a sink via a pump. You can also install a waste water tank or a gray water pipe to collect the dirty water.

Ensure hygiene

Do you want a Mercedes Vito camper van with a toilet? You can use a separating toilet such as the BOXIO toilet to ensure good hygiene in the Vito conversion. This toilet separates urine and solids, minimizes odours and makes emptying easier. It offers a compact and hygienic solution without a separate sanitary room. However, regular cleaning and correct disposal are important to ensure hygiene in the vehicle.

Here we have another concrete example from Michelle and Jonas:

Hey dear Vito friends, we are Michelle and Jonas @shellys_vanlifeadventure and today we would like to introduce you to our first project: the Mercedes Vito 114 CDI in extra long.

We were very lucky that the previous owner had installed a window in the rear and a sliding window in the side. So we had enough light in the car from the front.

As a first step, we carried out a thorough clean by removing the interior and treating any rust spots.

We continued with the sound insulation (Alubytil). We glued thermal insulation (Armaflex) over this and at the same time we installed the cables for the lights. We also installed a solar panel on the roof so that our van can be self-sufficient anywhere.

This was followed by cork insulation for the floor. The next step was to felt the Vito. We used Bus4fun felt for this.

We were incredibly proud that it worked so well. Of course, none of our expansion work was complete without countless YouTube videos, which were always a great help to us.

Most of the work was already done to turn a small van into a cozy camper. As we had no carpentry experience, we ordered the "CampBoks lite" module from Austria. The side panels were made to measure and sent to us.

Now came the task that we had been avoiding for a really long time... the small kitchen.

For 6 weeks, with the help of Michelle's father, we worked on the kitchen day in, day out, sawing and taking measurements. However, there were always complications, which cost us a lot of time and energy. There were moments when we were very desperate. But the positive energy of Michelle's father and all the ideas he contributed really impressed us and gave us the motivation to carry on. We are infinitely grateful for his help. We couldn't have done it all without him.

We have installed a 5 kg gas cylinder, a 56 liter compressor refrigerator, a Primus 2-burner stove, a BOXIO toilet and 2 large storage compartments in our small but fine kitchen. There are also small storage compartments under the front seats, which are accessible with heavy-duty rails.

We opted for a BOXIO Wash because it looks nice and the washbasin is big enough for washing up. By attaching a shower head, you can easily create a practical outdoor shower.

As we didn't feel like pumping water manually, we fitted a 2 bar submersible pump. There are 13 liters of fresh and waste water under the sink and an Alb water filter system. I also have 2 fresh water canisters in our CampBoks. This gives us 39 liters of fresh water in our mini van.

We are really looking forward to the adventures we will have with our little van in the future!

Your Michelle & Jonas :)
